June 10, 2026Department now holds both state and national accreditation, reinforcing commitment to excellence in public safety
The Charleston International Airport Police Department (CAPD) has been awarded accreditation through the South Carolina Law Enforcement Accreditation (SCLEA) program, a significant achievement that recognizes the department’s commitment to professional excellence, accountability, and public service.
With this accomplishment, the Charleston International Airport Police Department now holds accreditation at both the state and national levels, maintaining accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) while adding accreditation from SCLEA.
Accreditation is a voluntary and comprehensive process that evaluates law enforcement agencies against established standards designed to promote effective operations, ethical conduct, accountability, and continuous improvement. Agencies seeking accreditation must demonstrate compliance with rigorous standards governing policies, procedures, training, administration, and operational practices.
“This is an exceptional accomplishment for our department and a reflection of the dedication and professionalism of every member of our team,” said Jim Woods, Chief of Police for the Charleston International Airport Police Department. “The accreditation process requires a tremendous amount of work and attention to detail. Achieving accreditation from both SCLEA and CALEA validates our commitment to providing the highest level of law enforcement services while maintaining the trust and confidence of the traveling public, airport employees, tenants, and visitors we serve.”
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Accreditation program recognizes agencies that meet or exceed established professional standards and demonstrate a commitment to best practices in policing. Accreditation helps ensure agencies operate efficiently, effectively, and transparently while fostering public trust.
“This outstanding achievement reflects a strong commitment to operational excellence, accountability, and the highest standards of public service,” said Elliott Summey, President and CEO of Charleston International Airport. “Accreditation is no small accomplishment. It requires dedication, careful adherence to best practices, and a culture of continuous improvement. Chief Woods and the entire Airport Police Department have demonstrated their unwavering commitment to providing effective, ethical, and transparent law enforcement services. We are extremely proud of their accomplishment and grateful for the professionalism they bring to our airport community every day.”
The Charleston International Airport Police Department serves one of the Southeast’s fastest-growing airports and plays a critical role in maintaining the safety and security of millions of passengers, airport employees, tenants, and visitors each year. Through collaboration with local, state, and federal law enforcement partners, the department helps ensure a safe and secure environment while supporting the airport’s mission of delivering an exceptional passenger experience.
By earning accreditation through both SCLEA and CALEA, the Charleston International Airport Police Department joins a select group of agencies that have demonstrated adherence to the highest standards of modern law enforcement and public safety.
