Charleston Mayor William S. Cogswell advocates for Federal Support during meetings with congressional leaders at 92nd U.S. Conference of Mayors

Mayor William S. Cogswell has returned from a successful trip to Washington D.C., where he engaged in impactful discussions with key members of the Federal Delegation during the 92nd United States Conference of Mayors and met with city leaders from around the country to find innovative solutions to our problems.

The trip kicked off with Mayor Cogswell actively participating in nearly a dozen policy workshops alongside Mayors from across the nation. These workshops focused on critical issues such as environmental mandates, homelessness, affordability, policing, and transportation, providing a platform for the exchange of experiences and best practices. By sharing ideas and new approaches, America’s Mayors are helping Charleston solve our unique problems with uniquely tailored solutions.

The highlight of Mayor Cogswell’s visit were his one-on-one meetings with U.S. Senators Tim Scott and Lindsey Graham, and South Carolina Representative James Clyburn where they discussed pressing challenges facing Charleston. Mayor Cogswell seized the opportunity to advocate for crucial funding to address these issues the importance of federal support in enhancing Charleston’s infrastructure and overall well-being.

Mayor Cogswell emphasized the collaborative approach, stating, “Whether it’s Department of Transportation funding for infrastructure or HUD funding to help with affordability, we are going to lean on our federal partners to help us get the job done. We are grateful for our representatives in Washington, who are leading us in the fight to bring money back to Charleston for critical projects.”

The trip to Washington D.C., which took place from Wednesday, January 17th to Friday, January 19th, marked Mayor Cogswell’s first official visit since taking office on January 8th. His engagement with federal leaders signifies a commitment to leveraging innovative solutions and creative strategies in addressing Charleston’s challenges and securing necessary resources for the city’s continued growth. Mayor Cogswell will continue to build relationships that will help put Charleston at the forefront of conversations.
