The Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce names the late W. Brian Moody as the winner of the 2016 Joseph P. Riley Leadership Award. The prestigious award, given annually as part of the Chamber’s Honors Night, celebrates a visionary leader doing extraordinary work to strengthen the community, who is also an outstanding community volunteer that has demonstrated a lifetime of leadership.

Also referred to as the “Big Joe” Leadership Award, the Joseph P. Riley award was initiated in 1992 by the Charleston Metro Chamber, named for one of our region’s finest citizens, the late father of Former Mayor Joe Riley, who was also instrumental in many areas of growth in the region.

Moody, who was dedicated to serving and strengthen the Charleston community, was owner and managing partner of Moody & O’Neal CPA’s and Advisors. Moody believed that one should make the community that you live in better than you found it. He served three terms on the Charleston County School Board and was chairman from 1999 to 2000. Moody was instrumental in the campaign to gain approval for funding to build new and improved school facilities.

Additionally, Moody served on the Charleston Metro Chamber Board of Directors and was the Chairman of the Board from 2005 to 2006. In 2004, he chaired the Citizens for Community Improvement Campaign for the Chamber and was integral in the passage of the new half-cent sales tax referendum to improve county roads and green space.

A Clemson University Graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in Administrative Management, Moody became a Certified Public Account in 1995. In addition to his commitment to the School Board and the Charleston Metro Chamber, he was also a member of Trident United Way’s Alexis de Tocqueville Society, the S.C. Tax Realignment Committee, Governor’s Committee for School Bus Privatization, Volunteer Center Board of Directors, Operation Sight Board of Directors, Youth Services of Charleston and The Mayor’s Children’s Cabinet, as well as several professional organizations. Moody was highly involved with John Wesley United Methodist Church and served terms as Treasurer and was the Chairman of The Capital Campaign.

A native of West Ashley, Moody was diagnosed with a brain tumor in October 2014 and passed away on March 27, 2016.
