Charter Communications partners with H.Y.P.E. (helping youth pursue excellence) for H.Y.P.E. family night to commemorate launch of new high-speed broadband for families and seniors

May 18, 2017

Charter Communications, Inc. will partner with H.Y.P.E. at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 19th at H.Y.P.E. After School program – M.H. Newton Family Life Center in Sumter, to commemorate the introduction of a new low-cost, high-speed broadband service, Spectrum Internet Assist.  Supporting the ceremony will be Senator Tim Scott, Representative Clyburn, State Rep. David Weeks, Sumter Mayor Joe McElveen and Sumter School Superintendent Frank Baker.

“Today, student’s access to high-speed broadband in school and at home is a key ingredient for achieving academic success,” said Senator Scott.  “One without the other falls short of creating the digital learning opportunities students across America need and deserve. For this reason, I want to thank Charter for their leadership on this issue and their efforts to connect students, in so many communities, to affordable internet.”

The H.Y.P.E. After School Programs offers academic enrichment, homework assistance, food and nutrition classes and art and music for at-risk youth in the Midlands area.  Approximately 500 students and families are expected to attend H.Y.P.E. Family Night, which will include a digital divide roundtable discussion and broadband resources for family demonstrations.

Spectrum Internet Assist offers eligible customers low-cost broadband speeds up to 30 Mbps downstream/4 Mbps upstream, which meets and even exceeds the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC’s) definition of “high-speed.” Spectrum Internet Assist includes standard features like email boxes, internet security software and a modem at no additional charge, and is now available throughout Charter’s 41-state service area.

“Charter is excited to bring a whole new world of digital access and opportunity to low income families and seniors. Spectrum Internet Assist is an important next step in providing true high-speed connections to those who would otherwise continue to face a digital inequality in this country,” said Tom Rutledge, Chairman and CEO, Charter Communications.

“It’s crucial for cable and broadband providers like us to play a role in bridging the digital divide so that everyone has access to the information and tools they need to succeed in today’s economy,” Rutledge said.

“High quality education is the great equalizer in society, and there’s nothing more important than creating opportunities for young people to achieve academic excellence,” said Rep. Clyburn. “Bridging the digital divide is something we must all work together as a society to achieve, and I want to thank H.Y.P.E. and Charter for their collective efforts to provide students with the digital learning tools they need to earn an education and achieve success in the classroom and in life.”

To assist consumers with the eligibility process and enrollment, Charter has launched a new dedicated Spectrum Internet Assist website: www.SpectrumInternetAssist.com. Prospective enrollees may also call the Spectrum Internet Assist toll-free helpline at 1-844-525-1574 for assistance.
