Good City Architects designed new facility to be built with donor support

Cherokee County Meals on Wheels has completed the first phase of its “Rising Up Against Hunger” campaign in preparation for construction of a Good City Architects-designed expansion of its facility on West Montgomery Street in Gaffney. Once the plan is fully funded and constructed, it will increase the organization’s capacity to serve up to 1,000 qualified residents of Cherokee County.

“We have been awed to receive the support of a Cherokee County Cogeneration Partners along with several local businesses to help further our work providing meals and personal contact to members of our community,” shared Executive Director Terry Dennis. “As we approach our funding goal of $1.3 million, we are very grateful and look forward to beginning construction soon with committed community generosity and investment.” Cherokee County Meals on Wheels was founded in 1984 and moved into its current building ten years later. The organization now serves more than 400 clients through the work of almost 400 volunteers.

“As the need to serve hot meals to our homebound community members has increased, we have continuously found solutions. But, we’ve simply outgrown storage and food preparation space,” said Tonia Robberson, Chairperson of the Cherokee County Meals on Wheels Board of Directors. “When United Way determined our definite need for additional space, Good City Architects of Greenville found an ideal design solution that makes the best possible use of time and resources that will help us make an even larger impact on our community with a more adequate facility.”

“We are pleased to support Cherokee County Meals on Wheels as it continues to make a difference in our community,“ said Billy Pruitt, Facility Manager at Cherokee County Cogeneration Partners. “We firmly believe in the important work they do and are glad to help partner with them in delivering nutrition, companionship and comfort to even more of our area’s most vulnerable senior members.”

Meals on Wheels provides a free daily weekday meal and personal contact to elderly and handicapped members of the Cherokee County community. With no government funding, the organization relies solely on community donations and support to function and expand and is governed by a board of 22 local members.
