Chief Aubrey Jenkins statement on the passing of (Ret.) Captain Abram Coles, Jr.

December 17, 2012

COLUMBIA, SC – December 17, 2012 – I was saddened by the news today of the passing of Abram Coles, Jr. retired Columbia Fire Department Captain.  Captain Coles was the last surviving member of the original eight black Firefighters to join the Columbia Fire Department in 1953.

Captain Coles was good a friend and mentor to me.  Much of what I have learned in the fire service was due to his leadership and training.

Captain Coles began his career in 1953 and served honorably for 35 years.  He was born on July 7, 1925.

Captain Coles is survived by his wife Jacqueline, daughter D’Jaris Coles-White, four grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Funeral arrangements are being finalized and will be provided when complete.
