Citadel approves budget for 2016-17 academic year

The Citadel’s Board of Visitors has approved the college’s budget, which includes the combined tuition and fees rate for the 2016-17 academic year.

The Citadel’s all-in costs for in-state cadets will increase 2.9 percent for upperclassmen ($648 per year) and 3.0 percent for freshmen ($808 per year). Out-of-state freshmen and upperclassmen will see an increase of 3.1 percent compared to last year, representing an annual increase of $1,310 for upperclassmen and $1,470 for freshmen.

“To help families of cadets prepare, The Citadel provides the information below for all-in costs. All members of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets must live on campus due to the military culture, therefore the all-in costs include room and board, uniforms, laundry, dry cleaning, infirmary use, books, and other mandatory expenses not required by most colleges and universities, as well as general tuition,” said Col. Joseph Garcia, The Citadel’s vice president for finance and business.  “Fees for freshmen are higher due to the uniform purchases that year.”

The all-in costs do not include other fees as determined by the college, such as specific targeted fees or lab fees which vary according to the academic major or schedule of each cadet.

The Board of Visitors also approved fees for the evening undergraduate, graduate, and online programs managed by The Citadel Graduate College (CGC).  Fees for in and out-of-state graduate level students will be raised 3.25 percent. In-state graduate students will pay $569 with out-of-state graduate students paying $957 per credit hour when attending on campus.

Costs for evening undergraduate students per credit hour attending on campus will also increase by 3.25 percent. The in-state rate will be $456 and the out-of-state cost will be $847 per credit hour.

The college’s recently expanded online programs will cost $500 per credit hour for undergraduate courses and $695 for graduate level courses.

“The Citadel continues to look for methods to improve our operating efficiency while providing a superior military and academic student experience in this challenging fiscal environment for higher education,” said Garcia.

Students will receive invoices for the 2016-17 academic year in July.  All prospective students are reminded to complete the Federal Aid Application for Student Aid, or FASFA, which is used to determine the allocation of tuition support funds.
