To begin the City Council meeting this evening (Tuesday, March 18, 2025), City Council presented a special proclamation declaring March 2025, as Social Work Month throughout the City of Columbia and the Midlands area of South Carolina and encourage all residents to recognize and appreciate the valuable contributions of social workers in create a more just and compassionate society.

Director of Homeless Services, Kameisha Heppard, was present to accept the proclamation and was accompanied by her staff in the City of Columbia Homeless Services department. We thank Homeless Services for their tireless commitment to assist our unsheltered residents in our community!

During the consent agenda portion of the City Council meeting, Council approved various items relating to the City’s investment in our parks and recreation facilities. The amenities are being funded through Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) and are expected to operational by the fall of 2025.

The City of Columbia realizes the importance of parks and recreation as a key to better health and quality of life for its citizens. Parks are more than amenities that provide public places to play, they are key factors that spur economic development, increase the quality of life of its citizens, form the core of many neighborhoods and bring these neighborhoods and communities together.

New Amenities include:

  • Shade Sails will be installed at Hyatt Park, as an addition to the playground, zip line and swings that were installed in 2024. The shade sails will provide needed shade over the playground equipment. (Item #6)
  • A playground will be installed at Randall Avenue Park, as an addition to the green space, picnic shelter, fencing, park benches and picnic tables that were installed during the summer of 2024. (Item #7)
  • Restrooms will be renovated and upgraded to hands-free technology at the following (7) recreation facilities: (Item #8)

    • Pinehurst Park Indoor Restrooms, 2300 Pinehurst Road, Columbia, SC 29204
    • Katheryn M. Bellfield Booker Washington Heights Cultural Arts Center Indoor Restrooms, 2611 Grant Street, Columbia, SC 29203
    • Lorick Park Indoor Restrooms, 1600 Lorick Avenue, Columbia, SC 29203
    • T.S. Martin Park Outdoor Restrooms, 2700 Edison Street, Columbia, SC 29204
    • Eau Claire Print Building Indoor Restrooms, 3907 Ensor Avenue, Columbia, SC 29203
    • Charles R. Drew Wellness Center Indoor Restrooms, 2101 Solomon Way, Columbia, SC
