City of Charleston accepting nominations for community volunteer award

Mayor John J. Tecklenburg announced that nominations for the 18th annual Harold Koon Award for Excellence in Volunteer Service will be accepted by the City of Charleston’s Office of Neighborhood Services until November 30, 2016. Any resident of the city of Charleston can nominate an individual who has worked for community improvement. The award will be presented by Mayor Tecklenburg to the winner at a future City Council meeting.
The Harold Koon Award for Excellence in Volunteer Service was created in 1999, to honor of the memory of Harold Koon, a devoted and passionate neighborhood leader who passed away in 1998. Each year, the Neighborhood Commission chooses a person who embodies the traits which made Koon such a wonderful leader and neighbor.
Koon served as a volunteer for many years on behalf of his neighborhood and was president of the Mazyck-Wraggborough Neighborhood Association. For ten years, he organized an annual Christmas tour of the neighborhood, an event which earned $25,000 for neighborhood projects. Koon led beautification efforts, initiated flower and tree plantings and still found endless hours to help many arts, civic, preservation and environmental groups.
Reverend Alma Dungee received the first award on January 26, 1999. There have been seventeen subsequent honorees including last year’s recipient, Hollis Mays from the Lakeside neighborhood. The Neighborhood Commission selected these award winners for their exceptional volunteer service to the community and their neighborhoods.
