City of Charleston officials celebrate opening of Carr-Richardson Park

Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg, City Councilmembers, city of Charleston Director of Parks Jason Kronsberg, The Honorable Reverend Dr. Kylon J. Middleton, leaders from the Maryville/Ashleyville Neighborhood Association and members of the Carr and Richardson families held a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the opening of Carr-Richardson Park.

The official park opening was held on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at the park’s location – 1071 Bender Street in West Ashley.

The architect/consultant on the project was Liollio/Stantec; the construction contractor was Mashburn Construction.

The new park sits on about 2.86 acres of land in the Maryville/Ashleyville neighborhood of West Ashley. The park includes a roughly 2,000 square foot indoor facility with pavilions porches, restrooms and a catering kitchen. There are walking trails and new playground equipment for everyone to use, as well as a small parking lot. The city purchased the property in 2015 for $350,000 and City Council approved construction funding in 2016. The project was substantially completed in December 2022. The total cost of the project, including purchasing the site, is $2.7 million.
