City of Clinton Breaks Ground on Future Recreation Complex

September 22, 2020

You don’t have to live in Clinton, SC to know it’s a sports town.  The Red Devil reputation is widely known.  Tuesday, the city of Clinton took the next step to expand on the sports and recreation opportunities available to residents.

In November of 2018, Mayor and Council voted unanimously to purchase up to 170 acres for its first state-of-the-art outdoor recreation complex to be built or owned by the City of Clinton. After proper planning, development and coordination with appropriate state agencies, the City launched the project with a groundbreaking ceremony on the complex.

“We’re excited to break ground on the recreation complex,” said Clinton Mayor Bob McLean.  “The complex will bring new recreation opportunities to local residents and the opportunity for Clinton to host tournament play in the future.”

In 2008 the seed was planted for this project when Clinton City Council voted to establish a hospitality tax.  The one cent tax has grown to $5,328,000 and is the source for building the recreation complex and maintaining it.  Members of city council at that time include Truman Owens, Eddie McGee, Randy Randal, Shirley Jenkins, Danny Cook, John Dowdle and Mary Byrd.

The recreation center has been a top priority for Mayor Bob McLean. “I want this complex to be one that can be enjoyed by all our citizens, no matter what their physical abilities are,” said McLean.

The park is more than ball fields for various team sports.  It will include 2.6 miles of walking paths, multiple playgrounds, 2 miles of bike trails, a mountain bike trail, a gazebo for family events, and a 3,000-seat outdoor amphitheater capable of drawing major artists for outdoor entertainment.
