City of Columbia in partnership with Historic Columbia Unveils Historic Shandon Sign at Sims Park

April 23, 2025

On April 22, 2025, the City of Columbia, in partnership with Historic Columbia, unveiled a new historical marker at Sims Park in the Shandon neighborhood. This installation is part of Historic Columbia’s Connecting Communities through History initiative, a long-standing effort that began in 2008 to bring Columbia’s rich heritage into neighborhoods across the city.

Through this initiative, Historic Columbia works to connect residents with the stories that have shaped their communities, reinforcing a shared sense of pride and place. By placing history at the heart of neighborhoods like Shandon, the City and its partners continue to promote learning, reflection, and connection.

John Sherrer, Director of Preservation for Historic Columbia, introduced the new sign and shared more about the significance of the project.

“The City of Columbia continues to invest in its citizens and this is a great example of that. We appreciate the leadership of all of our elected officials… all City employees are behind this, working with Historic Columbia.”

The sign illustrates Shandon’s growth over time through its various stages of development, and also highlights the unique history of Sims Park as a vital community gathering space.

This project reflects the City’s ongoing commitment to preserving history, fostering community connections, and celebrating the vibrant stories that tell our story of Columbia.
