City of Columbia Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement highlights National Gun Violence Awareness Month

June 4, 2025

June is National Gun Violence Awareness Month and the Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement (ONSE) is partnering with several community organizations to host fun activities and informative workshops all month. The purpose of the events is to show support for survivors and raise awareness about gun violence. Gun Violence Awareness Month was established to draw attention to the reality of gun violence and shed light on its damaging effects within our communities. Workshops will cover topics such as: Firearm safety and storage, conflict resolution, Internet safety, positive youth development, anti-bullying, in addition to other relevant topics. The ONSE is also launching a new six-week interactive series under the Choose Peace, Create Change initiative called Power Up: Peace Mode.

Power Up: Peace Mode will be more than just a workshop series—it will be a movement to empower young minds, cultivate emotional intelligence, and inspire civic responsibility. Each week, participants will explore key Social Emotional Learning (SEL) themes including self-awareness, empathy, responsible decision-making, and conflict resolution. These skills are brought to life through hands-on service projects that address real community needs and promote peace-building values. The goal for all the activities and workshops is to engage youth and address gun violence in Columbia. All events are free to the public, but registration varies per event.
