City of Georgetown names Nelson Brown as new Chief of Police
June 5, 2026City Administrator Scott Whittier and Mayor Jay Doyle announced today that the City of Georgetown has selected Nelson E. Brown as its next Chief of Police.
Brown currently serves as Deputy Chief of Police for the Georgetown Police Department and brings more than 44 years of law enforcement experience to the position. Throughout his distinguished career, he has demonstrated a strong commitment to public safety, professional leadership, and service to the Georgetown community.
In addition to his extensive municipal law enforcement experience, Brown has pursued advanced professional training through the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and numerous specialized law enforcement leadership and investigative programs. He has also served in several federal and multi-agency law enforcement capacities, including appointments as a Special Federal Officer with the FBI, a member of Organized Crime and Drug Enforcement operations, a Special Deputy with the United States Marshals Service, a member of the Federal Fugitive Task Force, and a task force officer with the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Brown began his law enforcement career in 1982 as a Patrol Officer and steadily advanced through the ranks, serving in a variety of leadership and operational roles. His extensive experience and deep understanding of the department’s mission have earned him the respect of fellow officers, city leaders, and community members alike.
“Chief Brown’s decades of service, proven leadership, and dedication to our community make him exceptionally qualified to lead the Georgetown Police Department,” said Mayor Doyle. “We are confident that under his leadership, the department will continue its commitment to excellence, professionalism, and building strong relationships with the citizens it serves.”
As Chief of Police, Brown will oversee all operations of the Georgetown Police Department, focusing on public safety, community engagement, officer development, and maintaining the department’s standards of service. “Mr. Brown is duly qualified for this role and has consistently demonstrated outstanding leadership,” said City Administrator Scott Whittier.
“I am honored by the trust and confidence placed in me by Mayor Doyle and the City of Georgetown,” Chief Brown said. “I look forward to working alongside the dedicated men and women of the Georgetown Police Department and continuing our efforts to serve and protect the community with integrity and professionalism.”
Brown will officially be sworn in by Mayor Doyle during the City Council meeting on June 18.
Born and raised in Georgetown County, Chief Brown and his wife, Jamie, have seven children.
