City of Georgetown to dedicate new sign for historic West End Heritage Center

The City of Georgetown, in partnership with the City of Georgetown Arts and Cultural Commission, invites the community to attend a special sign dedication ceremony at the West End Heritage Center. The event will take place on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at 10:00 AM at 1623 Gilbert St.
The new sign is a gift from the City of Georgetown and its Arts and Cultural Commission, recognizing the deep historical and cultural roots of the West End community. 
Built in the late 1930s, the historic building has served many vital roles in the community over the decades. It originally functioned as the Howard School’s lunchroom and band room, and later as a USO Club for African-American soldiers. It has also served as a community center, the home of CAAHO’s Dream Keepers Center for the Arts, and the headquarters of the Howard High School Alumni Association.
Today, the West End Heritage Center stands as a pillar for preserving local history and celebrating a lasting legacy under the guiding ethos: “A Place. A Legacy. A Community.”
“We hope to see the community join us as we dedicate this new sign at the West End Heritage Center, a place rich in history and deeply rooted in the West End community of Georgetown,” said Al Joseph, Main Street Director for the City of Georgetown.
