City of Laurens to host community cleanup in honor of World Cleanup Day

The City of Laurens will host a community cleanup Thursday, Sept. 24, from 8 a.m. to noon, inviting residents to pitch in at two locations as part of World Cleanup Day.

Volunteers can drop in at South Harper Street and Farley Avenue or at Green Street and River Street. No advance registration was announced, and the city noted that participants are welcome to come and go during the four-hour window.

The effort is being held in partnership with Keep Laurens County Beautiful, the local affiliate that works year-round on litter prevention, recycling education and community beautification across the county.

World Cleanup Day is an annual global volunteer effort that draws millions of participants in more than 190 countries to pick up litter and mismanaged waste from streets, parks, neighborhoods and waterways. The observance has grown steadily since its launch in 2018 and now stands as one of the largest single-day civic actions in the world.

For Laurens, the event offers a practical way for residents, students, civic groups and businesses to spend a morning improving the look of the city’s corridors and neighborhoods. Roadside litter along gateway streets and near waterways is a recurring concern in communities throughout the Upstate, and volunteer cleanups remain one of the most direct tools cities have to address it.

Participants are encouraged to dress for the weather, wear closed-toe shoes and bring work gloves if they have them. Those planning to join are also reminded to use caution near roadways and to stay in visible, well-marked areas.
