May 26, 2016

On Thursday, June 2, the City of Mount Pleasant and Mayor Linda Paige will be presenting a street sign on Shem Creek in honor of local restaurant mogul Ronald M. “Ronnie’ Boals Jr. The sign is to be placed on the intersection of Mill Street and Church Street near Shem Creek and Coleman Boulevard.

The intersection that is adjacent to Shem Creek will be named “Ronnie Boals Boulevard”, to reflect all the great restaurants that Boals has brought to the Lowcountry. “Having known Ronnie Boals my whole life, I cannot think of a more deserving person to receive such an honor,” said Mayor Linda Paige.

Mount Pleasant Councilman, Paul Gawrych said “As a lifelong friend of the Boals family and resident of Mount Pleasant, I’m honored to be able to attend such a special dedication to someone who has done so much for our community, the restaurant business and Shem Creek.”

Born and raised in Charleston, Boals opened his first restaurant in 1967 at the age of 23 and is recognized for opening Mount Pleasant’s first casual dining restaurant and continuing to pave the way for family-friendly dining in the Charleston. With over 54 years in the business and a multitude of successful restaurants on Shem Creek and in the greater Charleston area, Boals has created a lasting legacy within the industry.

Ronnie Boals was also recently awarded with the Greater Charleston Restaurant Association Lifetime Achievement Award along with a scholarship in his name at the Culinary Institute at Trident Technical College in 2013. Boals’ legacy is continued by his son Wade, who also owns local restaurants such as Noisy Oyster and Big Billy’s Burger Joint.

The city of Mount Pleasant will have a public ceremony revealing the street sign on June 2 at 4pm. The ceremony will be followed by an after party at Boals R.B.’s restaurant on Shem Creek. “This is a complete honor and I truly appreciate the town of Mount Pleasant. They have given me a lot over the years,” said Boals.
