Cleanup and Repair Update Regarding Train Derailment in Laurens County

Laurens County continues to monitor post-incident operations pertaining to the train derailment that occurred in the early morning of July 27, 2026. Please be advised that this continues to be an ongoing effort.

Cleanup Operations

The last standing piles of the white material, which was identified yesterday as sodium borate, have been contained and cleaned this morning utilizing the vacuum trucks. CSX crew members will continue sweeping up any small amounts that may remain.

As an additional precaution, turbidity curtains and booms were placed as containment barriers near the incident site, as well as near the bridge.

Repair Efforts: What Nearby Residents Can Expect

CSX crews have been working diligently throughout the evening to restore the train tracks. These repair efforts are expected to continue throughout the afternoon and into this evening.

The last step of this restoration process consists of reparations to the bridge. Pile drivers have been transported to the incident site to complete this final step. Additionally, turbidity curtains have been placed in the water to contain any debris that may fall into Lake Greenwood during this step.

For nearby residents, please be advised that the work conducted by the pile drivers may produce noticeable, temporary noise. CSX crews intend to expedite this process to reduce any potential disruption this noise may cause, while prioritizing safety to the crew and ensuring structural integrity of the bridge.
