Get Off of the Sidelines and Into the Game County Announces Clemson/Carolina Recycling Challenge

COLUMBIA, SC – November 10, 2008 –  Clemson University and University of South Carolina fans will face off in the “battle of the bin” the week of November 16-22 during the Carolina/Clemson Office Paper Recycling Challenge, coordinated by Lexington County Solid Waste Management.

Lexington County Solid Waste Management encourages fans to bring their office paper to any of the County’s 12 Collection and Recycling Centers during the week of November 16-22 and recycle it in the cart representing the appropriate team. (Centers are open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. and Sundays from 3 to 7 p.m.; they’re closed on Tuesday and Thursday.)

The following paper can be recycled in the County’s “office paper” bins and will count toward Challenge totals: • Plain uncoated paper, any color • NCR/carbonless forms, any color

• Notebook paper, any color • Computer paper, all types • Receipts/tickets, any color • Stationery/letterhead, any color • Copy paper/copies, any color • All fax paper • Self-adhesive notes, any color • Card stock, any color • Envelopes without plastic windows • Laser/ink jet copies, any color • Cash register/adding machine tape • Message notes, any color • Typing paper

“Lexington County residents generate enough garbage to fill one football field every two and a half days, and much of that is paper that could be recycled at our Collection and Recycling Centers,” says Mary Pat Baldauf, Lexington County Recycling Coordinator. “By recycling their paper during the Carolina/Clemson Office Paper Recycling Challenge, residents can reduce their garbage, help the environment and show their team spirit at the same time.”

All recyclers will receive a free recycled cardboard team magnet, while supplies last, and can register for prize drawings. Prizes include a year’s free curbside garbage and recycling service from Southland Sanitation and Earth Waste, Inc., Jewelry Warehouse gift certificates and recycled-content gifts. Prize sponsors include Southland Sanitation, Earth Waste, Sonoco Recycling and Carolina Imports.
