Clemson professor named industrial engineering Fellow

CLEMSON, SC – April 8, 2010 – Anand K. Gramopadhye, professor andchairman of industrial engineering at Clemson University, has beenelected a Fellow with the Institute of Industrial Engineers, the highestrecognition conferred by the professional society.

The honorrecognizes Gramopadhye’s career in industrial-engineering research,which focuses on solving design problems in human-machine systems andmodeling human performance in technologically complex systems, such ashealth care, aviation and manufacturing.

Gramopadhye’s research has drawn more than $12 million in fundingfrom private industry and agencies including the  National Institutes ofHealth, NASA, the National Science Foundation, the Federal AviationAdministration and the Department of Energy that has helped support theeducation of more than 100 graduate and undergraduate students. He haschaired master’s theses and dissertations for more than 60 graduatestudents and his research has led to more than 200 peer-reviewedpublications that include journals, proceedings articles and chapters intextbooks.

Gramopadhye’s current research is focused on threeareas: visualization and virtual reality to support training andjob-aiding; support of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)education; and addressing information technology and process-designissues in health care, aviation and manufacturing.

As chairman ofthe department, he has overseen program initiatives that resulted insignificant growth in Clemson’s industrial engineering program. He twicehas been recognized by the National Academy of Engineering through theFrontiers in Engineering Program and serves as editor-in-chief of theInternational Journal of Industrial Ergonomics and on the editorialboards of several other academic journals.

The Institute of Industrial Engineers oversees professionalaccreditation in the field, publishes academic and professionaljournals, and sponsors a variety of awards and honors, of which electionas a Fellow is the highest. The international association was foundedin 1948 to provide leadership for the application, education, training,research and development of industrial engineering.
