Clemson’s Next Generation of Leaders Explore Fountain Inn’s Economic Blueprint

April 22, 2026

The City of Fountain Inn recently served as a real-world classroom for some of the state’s brightest academic minds. Mayor GP McLeer and city officials welcomed a cohort of students and postdoctorates from Clemson University’s Accelerate to Industry (A2i) program for an immersive site visit focused on municipal growth and community planning.

The A2i program is designed to bridge the gap between academic research and industry leadership, and the visit to Fountain Inn provided participants with a behind-the-scenes look at how a rapidly growing municipality operates.

From City Hall to Main Street

During the day-long tour, the Clemson delegation explored the core pillars of the “Front Porch of the Upstate.” The itinerary included:

  • Governance: A tour of City Hall and a briefing on the intersection of local government and community planning.

  • Economic Development: A walk through Main Street to discuss small business support and the city’s future commercial roadmap.

  • Public Resources: A visit to local parks and the Emanuel Sullivan Sports Complex, highlighting the role of recreation in urban development.

Mayor McLeer emphasized the importance of these collaborations, showcasing how economic development and quality-of-life initiatives work in tandem to create a sustainable city.

Bridging Academia and Industry

For the visiting postdocs and students, the visit was an opportunity to see how complex theoretical concepts—like infrastructure logistics and public policy—are applied at the local level.

“We were honored to welcome students and postdocs from Clemson… and share how local government, community planning, parks, and economic development all work together to shape a thriving city,” the City of Fountain Inn stated in a recent release.

A Growing Partnership

Fountain Inn has increasingly become a point of interest for regional educational institutions due to its successful balance of historic preservation and modern expansion. By hosting the A2i program, city leaders hope to inspire future leaders to consider careers in public service and regional development.

As Fountain Inn continues its upward trajectory, partnerships with institutions like Clemson University remain a key component of its strategy to attract talent and professional expertise to the Golden Strip.

About the Clemson A2i Program: The Accelerate to Industry (A2i) program at Clemson University is a professional development initiative that prepares graduate students and postdocs for successful careers outside of academia, focusing on leadership, commercialization, and industry-specific skills.
