Cleveland Street Sidewalk Project set to begin next week

The City of Greenville will begin a new sidewalk construction project along the north side of Cleveland Street, between McDaniel Avenue and Southland Avenue, the week of July 15. Weather permitting, the project is expected to take three to four months to complete.

This neighborhood improvement project is part of the City’s sidewalk expansion program, known as NSTEP, which is funded through the Capital Improvement Program each year. Dating back to 1999, the NSTEP program is designed to address gaps in the city’s network of sidewalks and construct new sidewalk on neighborhood streets that do not have them.

The scope of the project involves constructing a five-foot sidewalk with a curb lawn, relocating eight on-street parking spaces to private property and adding safety improvements such as ADA ramps at each corner. An additional component of the project is the removal of approximately 25-30 Leyland cypresses, which have reached the end of their lifespan. The trees will be replaced with significantly enhanced landscaping, including new trees and a variety of shrubs and flowering plants once all of the construction activities have been completed.

While it will not be necessary to close Cleveland Street during the course of construction, and access to residences will be maintained at all times, there will be periodic lane closures and flagmen will be posted at either end of the project area so motorists should use caution when traveling on Cleveland Street.
