September 7, 2022

The Red Devils Cross Country teams ran well at the 38th annual Eye-Opener 5K held on September 3 in Spartanburg.

The girls’ team finished 34th out of 46 teams. The boys’ finished in 10th place out of 49 teams. This is the first time that the boys team finished in the top 10 in this prestigious event.

Elizabeth Reid and Charlie Cody were each recognized for their top 10 performances in their respective races.

“Coach Mary Gibbs and I were very pleased with the performances of all of our runners last Saturday in Spartanburg. They were excited to run the Eye Opener because there were so many great teams from SC as well as North Carolina, Tennessee, and even Virginia. There were between 1500 and 2000 participants,” said coach Lee Atkinson. “Surprisingly, the Boys varsity team finished 10th which is the highest we have ever finished here. The individual efforts of Elizabeth Reid (9th place) and Charlie Cody (10th place ) were also notable because it was the first time we’ve had individuals finish in the top ten of these races. We are excited to see what the rest of the season has in store for our athletes.”
