Found in Translation: The Art of Steven Naifeh

The CMA organized the first retrospective museum exhibition of SC artist Steven Naifeh’s paintings and sculpture. The exhibition features 26 large-scale works of modern art, which reflect Naifeh’s personal taste, preferences and attitudes about geometric abstraction. In his art, Naifeh achieves a synthesis of the West and East as well as old and new, a blending of cultures recognized early on in the art he made here in America. His work represents universal harmony and attains this geometric symmetry beautifully with intellectual discipline, rigorous skill and authentic joy in the process of communication. Found in Translation is destined to inspire the community and open doors to understanding cultures beyond our own. It shows visitors that what we share culturally is perhaps greater than what separates us. Abstract art, like Naifeh’s work, is capable of expressing complex ideas like unity and continuity. ONE x 100: Creating Within Constraints

This is not a typical community gallery exhibition. The pieces in ONEx100 all fit within a 1x1x1 foot space and demonstrate enthusiasm for contemporary, minimalist or conceptual art practices. Artists were encouraged to find freedom within limitations and create within constraints.
Picasso: Master Prints
On view in Gallery 15 through August 11
This small, but luxurious exhibition is a rare opportunity for visitors to marvel at etchings and lithographs by one of the 20th century’s greatest artists up close. Best known as the inventor of Cubism, Picasso was prolific in still life, figurative art, and mythological scenes, all of which are featured in this exhibition. No matter what kind of print he was making or what the subject matter was, Picasso brought an extraordinary level of innovation and expertise to the art of printmaking, making every work in this exhibition a master print. This show is presented through the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Gayle O. Averyt, Mary Lou and Bob Burr, Mr. Robert W. Foster, Sr., Mrs. Carol C. Saunders,Ms. Ann Marie Stieritz and Mr. John B. Figures and Forms: The Glass Sculpture of Rick Beck

Similar to a magician, artist Rick Beck makes us look closely at what we thought we saw, only to see something dif
ferent than expected, and become surprised, delighted and amazed. In his first one-person exhibition at the CMA, Beck shows figures and forms sure to capture the imaginations of visitors of all ages. Beck creates his glass sculptures using clay forms to create a silicone mold for recycled glass, which is fired to 1650 degrees Fahrenheit. As the molten glass takes the shape of the mold, it can take anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months to cool to room temperature. Diamond blades shape the sculptures, and their surfaces appear rough and unpolished. That is intentional. I want light and color to pass through, but I want you to be looking at the form and the color, not at what’s pretty inside of it, Beck said. Light and color passing through the sculpture-instead of being on the surface only-can fool the eye and its interpretation of an object’s position in space.
Geometric Visions

Inspired by the exhibition Found In Translation: The Art of Steven Naifeh, Eau Claire community members, CMA Passport to Art participants and CMA Spring Workshop students created paper and tile mosaics based on the concepts of simple geometry.

Van Gogh, Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec, Modigliani, Picasso and Renoir lived and worked within a half mile atop the Parisian hill called the mount of martyrs. In this vintage film, made in the early ’60s as part of the CBS series Accent, filmmaker Jean Renoir gives an engaging tour of his famous bohemian neighborhood, discussing what life was like in a community of artists where his father was known affectionately as the boss. Jean talks about such luminaries as Cézanne and Degas, providing unique insights into several paintings depicting the hill and the Moulin d’la Galette such as L’absinthe. 30 minutes. Painting with Light

Students take an intimate look at Jean-Baptiste Armand Guillaumin’s Ferry Boat (1885)from the CMA collection and use the masterwork as inspiration during this eight-week course. Students are guided step-by-step on how to view light and color to complete an entire impressionistic painting with no experience necessary. Instructor Lee Swallie, a recent BFA graduate from USC, teaches a unique impressionistic style of painting to students of all skill levels. His one-on-one approach makes painting for novices approachable and fun. $320 / $256 for members.
Lecture: The Adornment of Geometry: Image, Text and Form
