Coastal Carolina teal goes green during football game vs. Campbell

August 29, 2018

When the Coastal Carolina University Chanticleers take on Campbell University Sept. 15, the game will be powered by 100 percent Santee Cooper Green Power.

The game will be celebrated as a zero-waste game, where CCU’s sustainability team will work to divert the waste produced inside the stadium, suite areas and alumni tailgate through composting and recycling.

“We are excited to again partner with Santee Cooper for the Green Power game,” said Matt Hogue, CCU director of athletics. “Sustainability is a hallmark principle at CCU and the Green Power game provides a great platform to illustrate the University’s commitment. We also thank Santee Cooper for assisting with the promotion of the game and encouraging fans to support our Chanticleers during their first official season at the FBS level, college football’s highest level of competition.”

Santee Cooper and CCU are long-term partners in renewable energy. They partnered to put the first solar pavilion connected to the grid in the state on the shuttle stop on Chanticleer Drive East in November 2006. The solar panels produce about 16 kilowatts of power.

“Coastal Carolina has always been a great partner,” said Mike Poston, vice president of retail services at Santee Cooper. “We’re excited that the Chanticleers are taking this opportunity to share the benefits of Green Power with their fans.”

Santee Cooper Green Power was born in 2001 in Chanticleer territory at Horry County Solid Waste Authority. Now, Santee Cooper has 28 megawatts of clean, renewable Green Power from sources including six landfill methane gas-generating stations, one wind turbine and four solar arrays. Proceeds from Green Power sales have been used to build five additional solar farms and 28 Green Power Solar School demonstration projects, 25 of which partner with South Carolina’s electric cooperatives.

Green Power is Green-e Energy certified, which means it meets the environmental and consumer protection standards set forth by the nonprofit Center for Resource Solutions. Learn more atwww.green-e.org.
