Coker College to hold open roundtable discussion for Women’s History Month

Coker College’s Center for Diversity, Interfaith and Inclusion Education will host an open roundtable discussion in honor of Women’s History Month. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held onMarch 1 at 7 p.m. in Davidson Hall on Coker’s campus.

The theme of the discussion is “Working to Form a More Perfect Union: Honoring Women in Public Service and Government.” A panel of women who are active in Hartsville’s business and civic communities will discuss their experiences and the important role that women play in public service and government.

The panelists will be:

  • Gloria Bell, retired Sonoco executive and Coker alumna
  • Sandi Brown, Owner of Burry Bookstore and a nuclear engineer
  • Darnell McPherson, Executive Director of Darlington County First Steps
  • Quinetta Buterbaugh, Director of the Hartsville Chamber of Commerce
  • Shannon Johnson, Olympic Medalist and Coker College Head Women’s Basketball Coach

Rev. John Foster III, associate professor of religion at Coker, will moderate the discussion. Foster was appointed last year as the campus director for diversity, interfaith and inclusion education.

“I am very excited about our Women’s History roundtable,” said Foster. “Our panelists are not only dedicated professionals who have succeeded in their chosen professions, but also each of them gives back to our community. They are true role models for our students who will be emerging leaders in their professions and their communities.”

Women’s History Month, celebrated every March in the United States, is an annual declared month that highlights the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. It coincides with International Women’s Day on March 8.
