Coker Hosts MLK Service and Remembrance Day

HARTSVILLE, SC – Coker College’s Center for Engaged Learning, Athletics, the Office of Campus Life and others across campus worked together to organize a community-wide day of service on Monday, Jan. 19 in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

At least 350 student-athletes participated in volunteer service projects at various sites across Darlington County. Projects included the following locations and activities:

    • Pee Dee Coalition and Durant Children’s Center: clean, landscape and wash windows
    • Darlington County Habitat for Humanity Restore: sort clothes and clean
    • Darlington County Habitat: shingle roofs
    • YMCA: entertain children out of school for the holiday
    • Carolina Family Planning: sort clothes and clean
    • Morningside Assisted Living: decorate doors and do activities with residents
    • Hartsville Soup Kitchen: prepare and serve lunch
    • Centerville Community Action Group: facilitate children’s activities at the park
    • Rubicon: clean
    • RTC Activity Room: paint
    • Carriage House of Hartsville: replant flower beds
    • Coker Campus/Sodexo: clean and landscape
    • Morrell Nursing Home and Rehab Center: do activities with residents
    • Darlington Humane Society: clean up and walk dogs
    • Rotary Club: clean up along Trailwood Extension
    • Kalmia Gardens: work at the Joslin Education Center
    • Hartsville First Baptist: clean and organize
    • Carolina Kids: paint, sort clothes and clean

On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Coker College offices were open, but classes in Hartsville and on the satellite campuses in Florence and Marion were suspended so that students and faculty could participate not only in activities in Hartsville, but also in their own communities’ programs.
