Columbia celebrates National Bike Month this May

May 1, 2025

The City of Columbia is inviting residents to take part in National Bike Month this May. In partnership with the League of American Bicyclists, the city is promoting cycling as a fun, healthy, and sustainable form of transportation.

Key dates include Bike to Work Week from May 12–18 and Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 16. Residents are encouraged to bike to work or explore local routes for fitness and leisure.

To support safe cycling, the City offers a few tips:

  • Get your bike checked at a local shop.

  • Plan your route using bike lanes and quieter streets.

  • Always wear a helmet.

  • Follow all traffic signals and signs.

  • Use bike lanes when provided (note: bikes are not allowed on sidewalks in Columbia’s central business district).

  • Stay visible with bright clothing and hand signals.

Columbia adopted its Walk Bike Columbia master plan in 2015 to improve bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure. To learn more about events and bike planning in the Midlands, visit columbiacompass.org/celebratemay.html.
