Columbia College presents “A Natural Wonder,” a K-12 art exhibition celebrating Georgia O’Keeffe

The Goodall Gallery at Columbia College continues the Georgia O’Keeffe Centennial Celebration with A Natural Wonder, a statewide Georgia O’Keeffe K-12 juried art competition featuring artwork from students attending Rosewood Elementary in Columbia, The South Carolina School for the Blind in Spartanburg and Dreher High School in Columbia.
A Natural Wonder runs January 8 through February 7, 2016. On Sunday, January 17, 2016, the Goodall Gallery at Columbia College will host a reception recognizing the students and their teachers from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. All events are in the Goodall Gallery at Columbia College and are free and open to the public.
“We are thrilled for our annual juried art competition to be part of the College’s Georgia O’Keeffe centennial this year,” said Jackie Adams, Goodall Gallery coordinator. “O’Keeffe was not only a talented artist, but she was a dedicated art educator. We look forward to honoring this part of her life exhibiting the students’ works in the gallery.”
Proposals were received from schools across the state and the winners were selected based on their creativity and willingness to explore the significant nature of O’Keeffe’s Columbia College story. Rebecca Penland, a former elementary art teacher in Richland School District Two and a 1986 graduate of Columbia College, sponsored the Penland Prize, which provided $1,000 to each winning school.
The Georgia O’Keeffe Centennial is a yearlong celebration of the artist’s transformative time as a professor of art at Columbia College in 1915. The Centennial is presented by the Michael J. Mungo Foundation in memory of Jennifer Mungo and is sponsored in part by the South Carolina Humanities Foundation.
