Columbia International University’s Rossi Building’s Dining Hall and Kitchen receive a new makeover

October 29, 2019

Talmage Architects recently re-designed the Rossi Building’s second floor which has been home to Columbia International University’s Dining Hall and Kitchen for students, faculty and staff since 1975.

The development of the new state-of-the-art Dining Hall and Kitchen required the demolition of 17,000 square feet of the existing second floor construction while establishing a new, open concept design with separate serving stations, increased seating and a brand new commercial kitchen.

In addition, individual meeting and dining rooms were also created, separated by glass partitions creating a contemporary feel. New canopy and cafe style seating was added to the front of the existing building.

The design, demolition and new construction was completed in a short period of under three months during the summer while the students were on break. This efficiency was a result of the collaborative efforts between CIU, Talmage Architects, Hallmark Dining and Mashburn Construction.

“Ted Talmage is a master coordinator – responder. He coordinated the construction team, the interior design team, and CIU’s team with the same magical skill of Pinocchio’s beloved creator Geppetto. The short timeline of our project was considered by some to be impossible, but Ted responded by dancing back and forth between his office and the project scores of times in order to keep us on track. Talmage Architects is a fast moving, nimble group, and we love them!” said CIU’s Chief Financial Officer Rob Hartman.

“We are extremely proud to have been a part of this complex and challenging project for Columbia International University. The new design is sophisticated, classy and refined. It allows for students, faculty and staff to enjoy a contemporary yet inviting atmosphere,” said Ted Talmage, Principal and Owner of Talmage Architects.
