COLUMBIA, SC – Rising third-year law students R.I. Smith and Rosanne Riley Glenn Sullivan, and 2015 graduate Mark D. Chappell Jr. of Columbia, S.C., recently were recognized with awards for their leadership, academic acumen and trial advocacy from the University of South Carolina School of Law.

Smith received the John Holland Scholarship, given in memory of John Holland, who graduated from the law school in 1980 and later died in an automobile accident. The scholarship is presented to a rising third-year student who demonstrates a commitment to leadership and extracurricular activities.

“Receiving the John Holland Award reaffirms my dedication to working with tomorrow’s young leaders through the Boy Scouts of America,” Smith said. “The skills and personal development that I’ve learned through scouting have guided me to where I am today. I look forward to teaching the same skills to young men and women for many years to come.”

Smith is a 2010 graduate of Wake Forest University and law clerk at the Pope Flynn Group.

Sullivan received the Stanley H. Kohn Memorial Scholarship, which is presented to a rising second- or third-year student who is a member of Phi Alpha Delta and who demonstrates scholastic achievement and high moral character.

“Receiving the Stanley H. Kohn Award is quite humbling. Being able to sit amongst some of the most accomplished students in our law school was quite an honor,” said Sullivan. “I strive to show professionalism and compassion every day, so it is very encouraging to have fellow Phi Alpha Delta members choose me for this award. It was wonderful to be able to meet and thank the donors for this award as well; I truly appreciate their generosity.”

Sullivan also was recently named 2015-2016 editor-in-chief of the Journal of Law and Education.

Chappell was one of three students to receive the Luther M. Lee Scholarship, which is awarded to third-year students with a primary interest in trial practice. The scholarship was established in honor of Luther Lee, a 1950 alumnus, legendary trial practitioner in Columbia and a pioneer of personal injury trial practice.

“I am truly honored to receive the Luther M. Lee Scholarship. Mr. Lee’s legacy of hard work and dedication to ensuring justice for injured persons has placed him as one of the greatest trial lawyers South Carolina has ever known.  As a future trial attorney, I look forward to carrying on his legacy.  I am grateful to the Lee, Eadon, Isgett, Popwell & Owen Law Firm and to the Lee Family for their continued support of the law school and its students.” said Chappell, who graduated in May.

The presentations were made in April during the School of Law’s annual Awards Day Ceremony, which honors students and faculty members for their outstanding achievements during the academic year.
