Columbia resident establishes USC rugby scholarship

May 14, 2015

COLUMBIA, SC – A University of South Carolina alumnus and former rugby player has donated $25,000 to establish a scholarship fund designed to lure the nation’s top players to the school.

Columbia resident Jeffrey Smolka, a member of the Carolina Rugby Foundation board, made the donation. It will help cut tuition rates almost in half for an out-of-state student who wants to play at Carolina. Rugby is one of the fastest growing sports in America, and UofSC’s rugby club is among the nation’s elite collegiate teams.

The team has won back-to-back Southeastern championships and participated in the national finals last year. Founded in 1967, the men’s rugby team is the oldest club sport at USC.
