Communities In Schools is lighting the way for South Carolina’s public school students

November 3, 2022

Communities In Schools of South Carolina (CISSC), a leading provider of Integrated Student Supports across the country and in South Carolina’s Title I public schools, is hosting its annual event Illuminating Communities In Schools of South Carolina on Sunday, November 13th at three locations across the state – Brittlebank Park in Charleston; the State House steps in Columbia; and Graham Plaza in Greenville. The event will kick off American Education Week with inspirational programming, student performances, and an atmospheric luminary display from 6-8 PM.

First launched in 2021, this event brings individuals and businesses together across the state to celebrate public education and acknowledge its role in achieving individual and collective success. Each luminary will represent one of the 24,500 students CISSC serves at 39 schools with a goal of raising funds to grow their impact and one day work in all 650 Title I public schools across the state that serve more than a half a million students who live in poverty.

The CISSC program has 44 in-school site coordinators who work to ensure students have everything they need to succeed – food, access to technology and school supplies, emotional support, and more. By bringing community resources directly to students, the program has been creating equitable learning conditions for more than 30 years in South Carolina.

Public education advocates across the state can support the event by sponsoring a luminary for $10 in honor of a CISSC student. Whether honoring one student for $10, five for $50, ten for $100 – or even 250 students for $2,500 – sponsors play a critical role in lighting the way for student success in school and beyond. Businesses wishing to pledge their support to public education can also sponsor luminaries.

“This event serves many purposes for our team and the mission of our work. Not only are we celebrating the students and families we serve, but we’re bringing organizations and individuals together to strengthen, deepen, and grow our impact across South Carolina. It takes all of us to provide a complete network of support,” stated Jamie Cooper, President & CEO of CISSC.

“Choosing to support the event and the work that Communities In Schools does is important to me,” stated Ken Bartee, an event sponsor and student mentor. “As a CIS volunteer and mentor, I have seen firsthand the difference this organization makes in the lives of children, and I am excited to support their efforts. This type of programming is exactly what our state needs more of.”
