Communities In Schools SC announces site coordinator of the year

October 26, 2026

Beverly Jackson, known as “Mama J,” has spent nearly 28 years helping students succeed

For nearly three decades, Beverly Jackson has been a constant presence at Birchwood High School in Columbia, helping generations of students navigate challenges, build confidence and recognize their potential. Now, Communities In Schools of South Carolina (CISSC) has named Jackson its 2026 Site Coordinator of the Year, recognizing her exceptional dedication to students, families and the school community.

Jackson, affectionately known as “Mama J” by students and colleagues, has served at Birchwood High School since 1998, making her the longest-serving site coordinator in CISSC’s history.

As lead site coordinator, Jackson works alongside school administrators and educators to identify students who need additional support and connect them with resources and relationships that help them succeed. Through individual support, weekly student groups and schoolwide initiatives, she helps students develop confidence, build meaningful relationships and discover a sense of purpose.

“Beverly represents what it means to be present for students, day after day and year after year,” said Jamie Cooper, president and CEO of Communities In Schools of South Carolina. “For nearly 28 years, she has been a trusted adult students can count on and a valued partner to the educators and families around her. Her commitment reminds us that meaningful relationships are at the heart of student success. We are incredibly proud to recognize her.”

The Site Coordinator of the Year award is a peer-nominated honor recognizing a CISSC team member who demonstrates exceptional leadership, builds strong relationships with students and families, and upholds the organization’s commitment to providing consistent, high-quality student support. The award was presented during the organization’s annual team meeting in September.

Jackson’s colleagues describe her as a calming presence who leads with compassion, grace and wisdom. Her ability to build trust and create a welcoming environment has made her a respected member of the Birchwood High School community.

At Communities In Schools of South Carolina, site coordinators like Jackson are at the center of the organization’s evidence-based approach to student support. Working directly inside schools, they partner with educators, families and community organizations to help address barriers that can interfere with learning, from academic challenges and attendance to basic needs and personal circumstances.
