Conestee Nature Preserve to host Great Southeast Pollinator Census event in Henderson Meadow
August 10, 2026Conestee Nature Preserve is calling on Upstate nature lovers, families, and aspiring citizen scientists to lend a hand in regional conservation efforts later this month. On Saturday, August 22, 2026, the preserve will host a drop-in counting session for the Great Southeast Pollinator Census at the Shortleaf Shelter and Henderson Meadow from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
Designed to map local insect populations and encourage healthy, sustainable habitats, the community science initiative offers volunteers of all ages a chance to observe and tally regional pollinators in real time.
Hands-On Science for All Skill Levels Participants visiting Henderson Meadow will receive guidance from local experts, including staff from the Conestee Nature Preserve, representatives from the Greenville County Soil and Water Conservation District, and certified Master Naturalists. The team will provide on-site assistance, plant and insect identification guides, and educational materials to help observers get started.
No prior experience or background in entomology is required to participate. Volunteers simply select a single blooming plant and spend 15 minutes tracking and recording every insect that lands on it. The collected data is then submitted to aid ongoing pollinator research and habitat protection programs across South Carolina and the broader Southeastern region.
Organizers emphasize that the gathering is built to be accessible and engaging for both seasoned nature observers and first-time counters alike.
Event Logistics & Location Details The drop-in program takes place Saturday, August 22, 2026, between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM at Entrance D of the preserve, located at 601 Fork Shoals Road in Greenville. Should inclement weather arise, organizers plan to reschedule the census prior to calling for a full cancellation. Residents with questions regarding the program can reach preserve staff directly via email at [email protected].
