Congressman Duncan Holds Meeting and Site Visit to Laurens Post Office in Continued Efforts for Much Needed Improvements

July 16, 2023

During a recent week of local constituent work, Congressman Jeff Duncan made it a priority to bring U.S. Postal Service officials from Washington D.C. and Columbia to the district to hear directly from constituents about various postal issues in their communities.

Included in the site visits was the Laurens Post Office. Local officials participating in the meeting included Laurens Mayor Nathan Senn and Laurens Police Chief Keith Grounsell.

“I have worked to get the USPS to address the long-standing issues at the Laurens Post Office for almost 8 years now. Last week, I was able to bring USPS officials from Washington D.C. and Columbia to Laurens to show them the concerns firsthand as part of my ongoing effort to address the issues,” said Congressman Duncan. “The role of USPS is enshrined in the Constitution, and though it’s an independent federal agency outside of the direct purview of Congress, my constituents deserve to have their concerns addressed and voices heard as it relates to USPS. I have repeatedly called on USPS officials to resolve safety issues with the Laurens Post Office and in May, I even received special permission to temporarily join the Subcommittee on Government Operations for the sole purpose of questioning Postmaster General DeJoy, himself. After our overall productive meeting last week with USPS officials, Mayor Senn, and Police Chief Keith Grounsell, I will continue to work to resolve this issue and will keep pushing for USPS to address the safety concerns my constituents have with the Laurens Post Office.”

After the meeting Mayor Senn had the following to say, “This is a project Congressman Duncan, his staff and I have been working together to pursue for quite some time. I have appreciated the diligence of Congressman Duncan and pursuing a solution for Laurens. There are many conversations still needed to chart the path forward, but I appreciate the long overdue attention that the Postal Service seems to be paying to this issue. Congressman Duncan and I have been clear that the current situation is not acceptable, and I look forward to developing plans for a postal facility which is suitable to meet our needs, both now and in the future, and facility which our entire community will appreciate.”
