Construction complete for new adoption center at Charleston Animal Society – Berkeley Campus

November 2, 2026

Berkeley County and Charleston Animal Society celebrated the completed construction of the new adoption center at the Berkeley Campus. The new 5,349 sq. ft. building is connected to the current shelter located at 131 Central Berkeley Drive in Moncks Corner.

The new adoption center has 27 kennels for adoptable dogs, a kitten room, cat room, two adoption rooms, and two large “meet and greet” rooms for potential new adopters. A new laundry room, office space, food prep and storage space are included in the new space. The expansion project also added 15 kennels to the existing building and renovated the existing exterior kennel area.

“We are proud to celebrate this much-needed expansion to meet the needs of our growing County. This project represents an important investment in the health and well-being of our community’s animals by expanding capacity, enhancing adoption services, and creating more opportunities to find them loving homes.” – Amy Stern, Berkeley County Council District 5

“The County’s investment in expanding the animal center and constructing a dedicated adoption center will provide lasting benefits for our community. Together, Berkeley County, Charleston Animal Society, and our dedicated volunteers are committed to supporting the important work of caring for animals, increasing adoptions, and encouraging responsible pet ownership.”– Johnny Cribb, Berkeley County Supervisor

“In the first year of our partnership, we saw euthanasia drop 43% at the Berkeley Campus and this new adoption center will help our lifesaving efforts tremendously. This is a model of government leaders listening to the public and developing a public-private partnership to deliver the care and compassion the Berkeley community wants for animals.”– Joe Elmore, CAWA, CFRE, President and CEO of Charleston Animal Society

Charleston Animal Society Berkeley Campus is preparing to open the doors of the new adoption center after the New Year. Total cost of the project is approximately $1,697,000. Additional costs have been offset by work performed in-house by Berkeley County Roads & Bridges, Facilities & Grounds, Information Technology, and Water and Sanitation.
