Councilman William Dudley Gregorie enters the race for mayor

CHARLESTON, SC – Charleston City Councilman William Dudley Gregorie formally announced his third run for Mayor of the City of Charleston during a press conference in the City Council Chambers where he represents District 6.
Gregorie said, “I am running for mayor with a renewed focus on the people of Charleston and the problems that we all face on a daily basis. Through a more rejuvenated brand of politics, we can advance sustainable urban growth with livability and affordability at its core. With a new politic, we can focus on our future, a future which has a more affordable city, a safer city and a city that works for everyone.”
Currently, Councilman Gregorie represents downtown and James Island neighborhoods. Prior to redistricting, Councilman Gregorie also represented several West Ashley neighborhoods.
In 2013, he was elected Mayor Pro Tem and served as acting Mayor for the City of Charleston during Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr.’s period of convalescence following surgery.
A mayoral candidate in 2007 and 2011, Councilman Gregorie now enters the race for mayor having served a vast representation of the City of Charleston and having twice been re-elected to a City Council seat.
During his tenure on City Council, Councilman Gregorie has served or currently serves on the Public Work and Utilities, Traffic and Transportation, Licensing, Community Development, Sustainability Advisory, Small Claims, Recreation and Human Resource committees. He held leadership positions on a majority of these committees.
Prior to his election to City Council, Gregorie held a distinguished 32-year career with the federal government that culminated as South Carolina State Director for the Department of Housing and Urban Renewal (HUD).
