Councilwoman Joyce Dickerson Installed as Immediate Past Chair on NFWL Board

December 15, 2014

COLUMBIA, SC – Richland County Councilwoman Joyce Dickerson was recently elected to serve as Immediate Past Chair on the Board of Directors for the National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL), the nation’s oldest organization addressing the needs of elected women at all levels of government.

“It is with great pleasure that I have the opportunity to serve as the Immediate Past Chair on the NFWL Board. I know how essential and vital this organization is to ensuring that more women are engaged in the political process and have the opportunity to become legislative leaders,” Councilwoman Joyce Dickerson said. “As Madeleine K. Albright stated, every country deserves to have the best possible leader and that means that women have to be given a chance to compete.  If they’re never allowed to compete in the electoral process then the countries are really robbing themselves of a great deal of talent.”

Dickerson was elected by her peers at the 2014 NFWL Annual Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where over one hundred elected women met to identify effective solutions to some of the nation’s most timely and pressing issues. Providing a non-partisan environment that encourages dialogue and the sharing of information and experiences, women leaders are able to build coalitions, share the concerns of their constituents, and identify out-of-the-box solutions to the most pressing issues facing their communities today.

“We are so proud of Councilwoman Dickerson and all she has accomplished,” stated Senator Diane Allen, NFWL’s Chair. “We are looking forward to her continued leadership in the Foundation and I know she will help us make next year one of the most exciting years NFWL has seen.”

Dickerson begins serving in her new position on January 1, and will hold this office through 2015. The Foundation will host its 2015 Annual Conference next fall, September 12-15 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Councilwoman Joyce Dickerson currently serves as the Vice Chair of Richland County Council and is serving in her third (3rd) term as a council member. Dickerson is committed to fiscal responsibility and sustainable budgeting, and has an open-door policy for all Richland County citizens. Councilwoman Dickerson supports economic development, job creation and transparency in government. Councilwoman Dickerson is married to retired Air Force Sergeant Matthew Dickerson and together they have two children.
