County’s flood recovery program, Mungo Construction form partnership to rebuild lives

Mungo Construction, founded by Mungo Homes, the nationally recognized Columbia-based homebuilder, is adding its expertise to Richland County’s efforts to help residents displaced by the 2015 flood.
As part of a federally funded program to replace single-family homes severely damaged by the historic weather event, Mungo Construction is demolishing existing buildings and constructing new houses, which will allow residents to return to their communities. New homes are being constructed in neighborhoods throughout the County.
“Mungo Construction is honored to enter into this partnership with Richland County in the mission to restore not only the homes, but the normal lives of the people who tragically lost their homes in the 2015 floods,” said Emily Holler, operations manager. “It is extremely rewarding to be able to provide the homeowners with a brand-new home that they can settle into again.”
The homebuilding initiative is funded through the federal Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program. According to federal guidelines, each house will have three- or four-bedrooms depending on the size of the family.
Richland County and Mungo are building 42 houses. The program assists low- to moderate-income families who were living in owner-occupied houses when the flood occurred.
CDBG-DR funding is administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Clayton Voignier, director of Richland County Community Planning and Development, oversees the County’s flood recovery efforts related to housing.

Mungo Construction was formed in 2002 to serve the specific needs of institutional clients and government entities and provide affordable housing for deserving families.
Richland County’s rebuild project is targeted for completion in July 2020.
