Cox becomes Burnette Shutt & McDaniel’s newest associate

Sarah J.M. Cox, a graduate of the Mitchell Hamline School of Law in Minnesota, has become Burnette Shutt & McDaniel’s newest associate. Her practice focuses on employment law, personal injury, civil rights law and litigation.
She also will represent clients in foodborne-illness cases and in grandparent rights cases.

Cox began working at Burnette Shutt & McDaniel nearly two years ago, serving as the firm’s senior law clerk while she completed her Juris Doctor through Mitchell Hamline’s American Bar Association-approved Hybrid program that allows students to continue working as they pursue their degrees.
In her role as senior law clerk, Cox assisted the firm’s attorneys as they prepared for trials, hearings, mediations and other proceedings. She also conducted legal research in areas such as employment, civil rights and family law. Her in-depth critical analysis of damages calculations has already helped settle at least two cases on favorable terms for clients.
Cox also worked at two other Columbia law firms as she completed her degree. Her duties included drafting discovery, motions, mediation statements and other legal documents. She researched a wide range of areas of the law, including property, medical malpractice, personal injury and criminal law as well as Social Security disability.
Cox earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She also attended the University of South Carolina School of Law.
