Crime drops in City of Greenville by 16.6%

September 15, 2026

Year to date, total crime in the City of Greenville has declined from 1,477 offenses in 2025 to 1,232 in 2026, a reduction of 16.6%. In July alone, offenses fell from 228 in July 2025 to 192 in July 2026, a 15.8% decrease.

“Our officers have worked tirelessly this year, initiating calls, staying visible in neighborhoods, and engaging proactively with residents,” said Police Chief Howie Thompson in a presentation to Greenville City Council. “Their commitment is reflected in the numbers. I’m incredibly proud of this team for leaning in, not waiting for problems to come to them, and delivering the kind of policing that keeps Greenville safe.”

Property crime has driven much of the overall progress, falling year to date from 1,282 offenses to 1,039, a 19% reduction. July property offenses also declined from 190 to 161, down 15.3%.

To systematically capture resident feedback, the Greenville Police Department uses the My90 Community Engagement tool, which integrates with the department’s Computer‑Aided Dispatch (CAD) system. After a non‑violent call is closed, complainants receive a brief survey link via text.

Survey results indicate strong satisfaction with both officer and dispatcher interactions. Ninety‑one percent of respondents rated their interaction with the responding officer positively, with 3% reporting a negative experience. Likewise, 91% rated the dispatcher positively, with 2% reporting a negative experience.

“Greenville’s residents consistently tell us the same thing: when they call, our officers respond quickly, treat people with respect, and bring a calm, professional presence to every situation. These comments reflect the heart of our public safety team — a group committed to showing up, listening, and delivering help with compassion. We’re proud of the trust our community places in us, and we’re working every day to honor it,” said City Manager Shannon Lavrin.

Beyond overall ratings, residents reported feeling respected and heard. Ninety‑five percent said they were treated with respect. Ninety‑three percent felt they were listened to. Ninety‑four percent said they hold a positive view of the Greenville Police Department.
