Dancing with the Stars Lexington raises funds for public education

LEXINGTON, SC – The Lexington County School District One Educational Foundation raised more than $90,000 during its annual Dancing with the Stars Lexington fundraiser on Thursday, May 1, at the Koger Center for the Arts.

This exciting event, styled after the popular television show, “Dancing with the Stars,” helps support the foundation’s efforts to raise money to equip Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) labs at Lexington One schools, redesign media centers to 21st century Learning Commons and support FOCUS, Lexington One’s Alternative Learning Center.

Len Kiese of WIS-TV and Lorri Yarborrough of TEAM ia and Palmetto Microfilm Systems, Inc., danced away with the top honors at the event.

Kiese won the 2014 Judges Award. Judges Danyele Gardner, Rhonda Marchant, Christy Shealy Mills, Grace Keller and Keith Sterett scored each of the dancers on a 90-second dance performed at the event. The local celebrities partnered with professional dancers from Columbia’s Ballroom Company to form the 12 couples competing in Dancing with the Stars Lexington. Second place went to Allison Sanford and third place went to Chris Wooten.

Yarborrough won the 2014 People’s Choice Award. This award was given to the dancer who received the most votes, raising the most money. Cheryl Layton finished second and third place went to Maria Mungo.

Local celebrities that competed include: Chris Balish, owner of Cola’s Restaurant, Garibaldi’s of Columbia, Anson’s of Charleston, Anson’s of Savannah and The Olde Pink House of Savannah; Bert Dooley, of The Dooley Law Firm; Dr. Kim Hicks, of Lexington Family Practice Lake Murray; Jennifer Holbrook, wife of University of South Carolina Head Baseball Coach Chad Holbrook; Len Kiese, co-anchor at WIS-TV; Cheryl Layton, executive administrative assistant for Lexington One; Maria Mungo, of Mungo Homes, Pilates by Maria and Villa Maria’s Kitchen; Allison Sanford, director of System Marketing for Palmetto Health; Katrina Shealy, South Carolina senator; Wally Steinhauser, owner of Wingard’s Nursery and Garden Center; Chris Wooten, owner of Bodyshop Athletics and Topspin Racquet and Swim Club; and Lorri Yarborough, of TEAM ia and Palmetto Microfilm Systems, Inc.
