Daughters of the American Revolution collaborate with Greenwood Museum for “A Revolutionary Adventure for Kids”

June 14, 2026

As America prepares to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Issaqueena Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) is partnering with The Museum of Greenwood to host a special family-friendly event designed to help children experience America’s founding history in a fun and interactive way.

“We Declare: A Revolutionary Adventure for Children” will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, June 26, at The Museum on Main Street in Uptown Greenwood.

The free event takes place one week before Independence Day and coincides with the opening of The Museum’s new Revolutionary War exhibit.

“The idea stemmed from a conversation with Carolyn Nations, who leads the South Carolina DAR America 250! Committee. We both feel it is important to involve children in the upcoming America 250! celebrations,” said Karen Petit, regent of the Issaqueena Chapter, NSDAR. “We wanted to create a fun, hands-on way for children to connect with America’s founding story.”

Karen Jennings, The Museum’s executive director, said America 250! is a wonderful opportunity to help young people connect with the story of the nation’s founding.

“The Declaration of Independence is more than a historic document — it is a statement of the ideals of liberty, equality and self-government that continue to shape our country today. By engaging children through hands-on activities and age-appropriate learning experiences, we can inspire curiosity about history and help the next generation appreciate the courage and vision of those who helped create our nation,” she said. “It is vital that we share these stories with our children so they can better understand the freedoms and responsibilities that come with being Americans.”

Families attending the event will enjoy a variety of interactive and educational activities focused on the Declaration of Independence and Revolutionary War history.

Scheduled activities include readings from Petit’s children’s book, “Celebrate America! The People Declare Independence,” along with opportunities for children to meet Louie, an adorable small dog who is the book’s featured character.

Children will receive patriotic treat bags and have the chance to make tricorn hats, sign a commemorative Declaration of Independence for the nation’s 250th anniversary, and have their photos made with life-size figures of George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson.

A spinning wheel demonstration by historical reenactor Jean Hutchinson will give children an up-close look at colonial-era life and skills.

The Museum will provide refreshments for children and show an animated film about George Washington in its video room during the event. Families will also have the opportunity to tour The Museum’s new Revolutionary War exhibit.

“This event reflects a shared commitment between the DAR and The Museum to make history engaging and accessible for local families while building excitement for America’s 250th anniversary in 2026,” Petit said.
