DAV Charitable Service Trust awards a $35,000 grant to Senior Resources to help provide meals to homebound veterans

April 13, 2026

Senior Resources has received a generous grant of $35,000 from DAV Charitable Service Trust to provide nutritional support through Meals on Wheels to veterans in Richland County. This funding will be used to deliver hot, daily meals to homebound veterans, ensuring they receive the nourishment they need to remain healthy and independent.

With Columbia and Richland County home to a large military community, many veterans choose to retire here after their years of service. For some, aging or disability can make everyday tasks like grocery shopping and cooking more difficult. Through Meals on Wheels, Senior Resources is proud to help ensure local veterans can continue living safely and independently in their own homes.

Senior Resources currently delivers hot and frozen meals to the doorsteps of more than 1,100 elderly and disabled residents across Richland County annually. Each delivery provides not only nutritious meals, but also a friendly check-in that helps combat isolation and ensures clients are safe and well. Through this effort, Senior Resources has served more than 2,000 meals to local veterans in need this year.

Mr. Thomas, a U.S. Army veteran who served during the Vietnam War, is one of the veterans who benefits from the program. After experiencing mobility challenges in recent years, preparing regular meals became difficult. Meals on Wheels now delivers nutritious meals directly to his home, providing both dependable nutrition and a regular connection to the community. Volunteers say Mr. Thomas is always quick with a smile and enjoys sharing stories from his years of service when they stop by with his meals.

As the only provider of Meals on Wheels in Richland County, Senior Resources remains committed to supporting older adults and veterans throughout the community. Funding from the DAV Charitable Service Trust helps ensure that veterans like Mr. Thomas have access to the nutrition and support they need to maintain their independence and quality of life.
