Deadline Quickly Approaching for REAL ID Compliance — Are You Ready?
April 30, 2025Time is running out for South Carolina residents to ensure they are compliant with federal REAL ID requirements. The deadline to have a REAL ID for boarding domestic flights and entering certain federal buildings is May 7, 2025 — now just a little over two weeks away.
If your driver’s license or identification card does not have a gold star in the upper right corner, it is not REAL ID-compliant. Without it, beginning May 7, you will need an alternative form of federally approved identification, such as a passport, to board commercial flights within the U.S. or access secure federal facilities.
What You Need to Do:
-
Check your license: Look for the gold star. If it’s not there, your license is not REAL ID-compliant.
-
Gather your documents: You’ll need proof of identity, Social Security number, two proofs of current address, and if applicable, proof of legal name changes.
-
Visit your local SCDMV office: You can apply for a REAL ID in person at any SCDMV branch. Some documents may be uploaded online in advance to save time.
Who Needs a REAL ID?
-
Anyone who plans to fly domestically using a driver’s license as identification.
-
Anyone who needs access to secure federal buildings, military bases, or nuclear power plants.
Those who do not fly or enter these types of facilities may choose to keep a standard (non-compliant) license or ID.
Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute
SCDMV offices may experience longer wait times as the deadline approaches. Officials are encouraging residents to act now to avoid the rush and ensure they are ready well before May 7.
