Dear Debby and Jerry: Advice on Dating in a New World

Dear Debby and Jerry,

I have subscribed to two of the major Internet dating sites and I have been amazed at the spectrum in quality of written profiles where individuals describe themselves and the person they are seeking. Though I would not compare it with writing a great resume when one is looking for a job, it certainly seems important to put your best foot forward. Obviously, some people are more capable than others in doing this. Is there a service to assist in writing profiles for Internet dating sites?

Dear Patton,

You have addressed something that is so obvious, but so little heeded by many subscribers to Internet dating sites. This column does not have enough space to give you examples of the profiles or descriptions many people post on their site. Many are not aware of what signals they may be sending to those reading about who they are and what they want. Some profiles project anger, some are frivolous, some use one sentence (that says nothing), some forgo good grammar, etc. Some online dating sites offer assistance in writing one’s profile, but our personal experience is that the quality or interpretation by their staff writers is not impressive. If someone is lacking in the skill of writing or projecting their best image, we definitely recommend outsourcing these skills. What could be more important than finding the person that is a right fit for you! If nothing else, let a good friend help you write your profile or employ a writing professional.

As an outgrowth of this column and the many readers who have shown interest in the quality of those they attract through Internet dating, Debby and Jerry are offering assistance in this area. For the first 5 readers asking for help in putting together a profile, we will aid them on a free basis. Just send us copies of your current profile (if you are posted on a site) or write us for a questionnaire that we can send you by regular mail. Of course, you may use our email address and be assured of strict confidentiality.
