Denmark Tech instructor named Faculty of the Year by South Carolina Association of Technical College Commissioners

The annual award honors one faculty member from the state’s 16 technical colleges who demonstrates outstanding teaching, commitment to student success and meaningful contributions to the college and surrounding community. Candidates are nominated by the individual institution’s area commission.
Sims-McAlister, who also serves as the founder and advisor of Denmark Tech’s award-winning Oratorical Society, has helped build a culture of expression and confidence among her students through public speaking, creative performance and critical dialogue. The society has earned statewide recognition for its powerful debate performances.
“Sims-McAlister brings a level of integrity, thoughtfulness and care to her work that exemplifies what teaching at its best looks like,” said Denmark Technical College president and CEO Willie L. Todd Jr., Ph.D. “She challenges students to think deeply, speak clearly and lead with intention. The skills they learn in her classroom will serve them throughout their entire lives.”
Sims-McAlister said the recognition is a meaningful reflection of the work she values most.
“I’m honored by this award but more than anything, I’m proud of what it represents,” said Sims-McAlister. “When students find the confidence to speak their truth and trust their voice, it opens doors in every part of life. Helping them reach that point is the most rewarding part of what I do.”
This marks the second time Denmark Technical College has received a top honor from SCATCC in recent years, following Dr. Todd’s selection as CEO of the Year in 2022.
