CHARLESTON, SC – May 14, 2012 – The man who has led the state of South Carolina’s library for the last five years is coming to The Citadel. David S. Goble, a 1969 graduate, has been named director of library services at the Daniel Library.

Goble will assume his new duties on July 1. As the director of the South Carolina State Library, Goble guided the state agency through significant budget and staffing cuts while optimizing resources and investment along with library services. He managed a budget in excess of $14.1 million and implemented a statewide workforce development program, which enabled public libraries to help South Carolinians find employment.

“David Goble’s work as our state librarian has been very impressive,” said Sam Hines, provost and dean of the college. “We are excited about the energy and expertise he will bring to the Daniel Library.

Goble understands the changes in the field of library science and he knows that we must embrace the importance of technology in this area.”

As a cadet Goble was the regimental commander in his senior year. He also was commander of the Summerall Guards silent drill platoon and a member of the President’s Advisory Committee. Upon graduation, Goble was commissioned in the Marine Corps and served in Vietnam.

“The constant thread running through my professional career is innovation and leadership. The Citadel was the formative experience of my life and the Honor Code the ethical foundation of all my actions,” Goble said. “The Citadel and my experience as a captain in the Marine Corps taught me the essence of leadership and the fact that it requires intellectual discipline and stamina.”

Goble spent 18 years in the banking industry before entering the library services field. Before becoming director of the South Carolina State Library, he was dean of libraries at Central Piedmont Community College. He has also held positions at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Library and at the North Carolina State University Libraries. In addition to his bachelors in English from The Citadel, Goble earned a Master of Arts in American Literature from the University of South Carolina and a Master of Library Science from the University of North Carolina.
