District begins process to draw attendance lines for Jackson Creek Elementary

Richland School District Two is beginning the process of drawing attendance lines for its newest elementary school, Jackson Creek Elementary. The school board approved the name at its regularly scheduled meeting on August 23. Jackson Creek is the district’s 20th elementary school. It’s currently under construction on Trenholm Road Extension and scheduled to open in fall of 2017. Jackson Creek will help relieve overcrowding at elementary schools in the southern portion of the district.
The district will host a series of Community Feedback Sessions on the proposed new attendance lines to garner public input:
- Thursday, Sept. 15 — Joseph Keels Elementary
- Monday, Sept. 19 — Windsor Elementary
- Monday, Sept. 26 — Conder Elementary
- Wednesday, Sept. 28 — Forest Lake Elementary
- Monday, Oct. 3 — E.L. Wright Middle (Latino Community Focused Session)
Each session begins at 6 p.m. with a brief presentation followed by time for parents to review maps, ask questions and complete feedback forms.
Downsizing schools and creating capacity allows the district to open new schools with room to grow. The new lines should result in the removal of portable classrooms at multiple schools. Several factors will be taken into consideration throughout the process, including boundaries such as roads, creeks, rivers and neighborhoods as well as bus routes.
Funding for the construction of Jackson Creek Elementary is coming from the 2008 bond referendum. Maps and more information about the proposed attendance lines, current enrollment, and projected enrollment for individual schools will be available on the district’s website later in September. The proposed new attendance lines will likely receive final board approval in October.
